Secondary School Project
The Ardoch Secondary School Support Project is an innovative secondary school support model which develops holistic early intervention and prevention programs at schools. The project focuses on secondary school aged students and aids in the prevention of issues such as early school leaving, irretrievable family breakdown and youth homelessness.
Ardoch's Secondary Support Project at Albert Park Secondary College provided support to over 140 students until the school's closure at the end of 2006. Ardoch's work with students from the College continues as Ardoch's Transition and Support Project.
The goal of the Ardoch Secondary School Support Project is to develop a secondary school support model that is responsive to the learning and support needs of students, recognising that disengagement from school is one of the results of students experiencing issues including homelessness, mental illness, family breakdown, poverty and substance abuse. The strategies and programs delivered by the project are based on the priorities and needs of students as identified by each school community and delivered collaboratively with school staff and community agencies.
The Secondary School project involves:
- Broadening curriculum options and assisting students to develop vocational pathways.
- Developing and implementing support programs for students, including ensuring that basic needs such as food, clothing, school materials are provided and students are learning to access community services (e.g. health) that are available to them.
- Linking relevant government agencies, community agencies, business and volunteers into the schools.
- Skilling and supporting volunteers to work in the schools.
- Providing opportunities for relevant professional development for school staff and community workers.
- Producing documentation that enables the model to be transferred across secondary schools in Victoria and nationwide.
