Secondary Student Volunteering
The involvement of secondary school age students within Ardoch's primary schools and early childhood programs has proven to be an extraordinary success.
The aim of this program is for secondary student volunteers to assist us in fulfilling the need of a primary school, kindergarten or individual child.
Secondary students fulfill a number of important roles. Students are placed within primary schools or kindergartens. This includes providing one-on-one assistance to students in literacy and numeracy support programs, assisting with breakfast programs, sports and crafts activities as part of the 'Lunchtime Activities' program and other extra-curricular activities.
Beyond the direct educational and welfare program involvement, the secondary student volunteers act as mentors and positive role models to the younger children.
The secondary school student volunteer program:
- Raises awareness amongst secondary school students about issues affecting disadvantaged children and their families, and the importance of preventative strategies.
- Encourages young people to be involved in the prevention of youth homelessness. This helps to build a stronger sense of community and active citizenship.
- Provides young volunteers with the opportunity to gain important skills and experience as preparation for entering the workforce.
